Memory Card Buyers’ Guide

SD, SDXC, SDHC, UHS-I, UHS-II, U3, V30, CFexpress, Sandisk, Lexar, Kingston, Walmart…the list goes on. Memory cards can be a baffling thing to choose and in this article, I’m going to give you a framework for making the right purchase for you and hopefully demystify some of the random letters on the cards you buy so you know what the memory in the card is capable of.

Before we even get into choosing the right card for your needs, let’s look at a couple of important things to factor in when purchasing a memory card.

In my time as a photographer, I’ve seen too many people settle for a cheap memory card. At the very best, a bargain memory card might be too slow for your camera and result in missing moments because the camera buffer is full and waiting for the card to be written to. At worst, you may end up losing all your photos to a failed memory card. As with most things, if you buy cheap, you buy twice.
