Fujifilm announces the GFX 100S II & GF500mmF5.6 R LM OIS WR

· 16.May.2024

Turning to the GFX Series now, Fujifilm have also announced the release of the GFX 100S II & GF500mmF5.6 R LM OIS WR.

GFX 100S II

The GFX100S II features a newly developed 102MP high-speed image sensor, the GFX 102MP CMOS II, and Fujifilm’s latest high-speed image processing engine, the X-Processor 5, all housed within a compact body weighing approximately 883g, making it the lightest in the 102MP large format GFX Series camera. It delivers rich tonal gradations and shallow depth of field, and features AI-based subject detection AF – a high-speed, highly precise AF that has been significantly improved compared to the previous model. With this fast and precise AF and improved continuous shooting speed of up to 7.0 frames per second, the GFX100S II accurately captures moving subjects like never before. The in-body image stabilisation function has also been improved to 5-axis with a maximum of 8 stops – achieving the highest performance in the GFX Series. It also excels at producing smooth, colourful 4K/30P movies for high-quality image production.

Designed for both professional photographers and enthusiasts looking to explore the world of large format photography, the GFX100S II delivers extraordinary image rendering capabilities and improved portability.

Main features

Large format sensor with 102MP delivering an extraordinary level of image quality

  • Newly developed 102MP large format sensor GFX 102MP CMOS II and the latest high-speed image processing engine X-Processor 5
  • Improvements to the pixel structure, allowing ISO 80 to be used as the normal sensitivity
  • Increased efficiency of light utilisation at the edge of the sensor, therefore enhancing image quality and AF accuracy at the periphery of the lens
  • 20 Film Simulation modes, including REALA ACE, which combines faithful colour reproduction and high contrast tonality
  • Pixel Shift Multi-Shot feature, which enables 4x resolution and faithful colour reproduction, and controls the IBIS mechanism at an advanced level to shift the image sensor by 0.5 pixels at a time and shoot 16 RAW images in quick succession

Powerful IBIS mechanism in a compact body

  • The camera is equipped with a meticulously designed IBIS. The combination of a gyro sensor and an acceleration sensor, enabling the camera to achieve 5-axis and up to 8.0-stop anti-shake performance
  • Same compact dimensions as its predecessor, measuring approximately 150mm in width, 104mm in height and 87mm in depth, and weighing approximately 883g, making it the lightest model in the GFX Series with a 102MP large-format sensor
  • BISHAMON-TEXTM texture that enhances grip at various angles when holding the camera

Capture decisive moments with the enhanced high-speed, high-precision AF and continuous shooting performance

  • Subject detection AF by AI developed using deep learning technology and AF prediction algorithm, surpassing previous models’ motion tracking abilities and enabling superior performance in fast-moving scenes
  • Maximum shooting speed of 7.0 frames per second thanks to the improved readout speed of the newly developed high speed sensor GFX 102MP CMOS II and a new shutter drive
  • 5.76-million dot high-resolution EVF with a high magnification ratio of 0.84x

4K/30P movie recording capability, ensuring high-quality video production

  • ISO 100 can be used as the standard sensitivity enabling wide dynamic range and low noise shooting
  • Tracking AF function during video recording to easily specify the subject to be tracked by touching the screen, even in situations involving multiple subjects
  • 4K/30P 4:2:2 10bit video recording to an SD card inside the camera, plus Apple ProRes9recording by connecting an external SSD via USB Type-C
  • 13+stop F-Log2 that allows recording of richly graded video and greatly improves flexibility in post-production

Pricing and availability

The GFX 100S II will be available 17th June 2024 from authorised Fujifilm retailers at a suggested retail price of £4999 / $4999 / €5499.

GF500mmF5.6 R LM OIS WR

The GF500mmF5.6 R LM OIS WR is a super telephoto prime lens that can capture images at up to 500mm (equivalent to 396mm in 35mm format), making it the longest in the GF lens series. When combined with the FUJINON Teleconverter GF1.4X TC WR (available separately), it achieves a maximum focal length of 700mm (equivalent to 554mm in 35mm format). Despite being a super telephoto lens, it weighs approximately 1,375g and offers excellent portability.

A combination of the powerful telephoto performance of the GF500mmF5.6 R LM OIS WR with the high resolution of the GFX camera series results in the extremely precise reproduction of fine details. The lens can accurately capture the sweat flying from athletes during decisive sports moments, the wrinkles on the skin of wild animals, and the individual feathers of birds – delivering a level of realism and detail that cannot be perceived with the naked eye.

By miniaturising a typically large and heavy super telephoto lens and achieving high-speed and high-precision autofocus, the GFX Series enables super telephoto photography in sports, wildlife and bird photography, where portability and mobility are an advantage. mFurthermore, with improved image stabilisation sensing accuracy and optimal mechanical design, it achieves powerful image stabilisation with up to 6.0 stops of compensation. Photographers can comfortably shoot handheld in the challenging super telephoto range, where camera shake is most likely to occur.
